GPA is committed to providing safe, healthy and productive work environment for all its employees. At the end of April’14 GPA’s overall Medical Case rate was 1.22
Two sites within GPA, namely Amsterdam (Netherlands) and Penrith (Australia) were recognized for Safety Excellence. They received the Chairman’s Safety Award for the period 1Nov’12– 31 Oct’13. The award is presented to the sites that demonstrate Safety Excellence verified by an independent third party audit for various elements of safe operating procedures, good housekeeping and management commitment. Also the sites need to demonstrate exemplary safety performance by having Medical Case Rate of 1.0 or less.
Both Amsterdam and Penrith sites have had 3 + years of zero Medical case.
Martin Mense, site manager at Amsterdam, contributes this success to the shop floor approach. “The team gets all employees actively involved in the total performance, focusing on small day to day shop floor improvements and safety issues. The managers are giving the general goals and objectives and from there mainly supporting this process, where operators have their own frequent observations and root cause discussions, introducing and implementing their own solutions. The Amsterdam team experiences that this management approach has resulted in high involvement and great contribution of all our people.”
Mark Ryan, manufacturing manager at Penrith comments “At Penrith, we have a motto which states, “Safety is everyone’s concern” and all employees understand the importance of safety; it is discussed by all employees at all levels on a daily basis. The employees maintain a high level of housekeeping which assists in maintaining a safe workplace. Every employee keeps an eye out for each other to ensure that they return home in the same condition they started the day. We all work towards maintaining a high safety standard and we continually review our processes to ensure we maintain the safety standard required.”
Martijn Lute, continuous improvement coordinator from Paints & Linings, comments: “Our Tri-Sure® Paints & Linings factory is known for its “safety first” mentality. In the Paints & Linings factory every employee is disciplined in using the safety standards & regulations and is willing to continuously improve on safety. In addition to several safety kaizens, 5S, risk analysis, audits by operators and a safety committee there is also a daily meeting with operators to get them involved in these projects. The Tri-Sure® management highly appreciates this mentality and provides support to improve on safety all the time. Thanks to this culture and the willingness of all employees to continuously improve on safety, our Paints & Linings factory has been without an accident in over 10 years.”
